Moving is physical, early-starting, weather-exposed work, and on our jobs a good deal of it happens in other people's homes at a difficult moment in their lives. That second part is the one people underestimate.
We are not going to describe this as a glamorous job. It is a demanding one that suits people who are careful, punctual, physically capable and genuinely decent with older customers.
What the Work Actually Involves
- Sustained physical work — lifting, carrying, stairs, in all weather
- Early starts, and days that occasionally run long
- Working inside customers' homes, respectfully and carefully
- A lot of senior customers, who need patience more than speed
- Wrapping, protecting, dismantling and reassembling furniture
- Loading a truck properly, which is a skill rather than brute force
- Communicating clearly with customers rather than working in silence
What Suits This Work
- Turning up when you said you would, every time
- Care with other people's belongings and other people's homes
- Patience with an older customer who is having a hard day
- Working as part of a crew rather than around one
- Saying when something is wrong rather than hoping nobody notices
- Physical capability, sustained over a full day
