PLANNING

Senior Move Planning

We plan the move before the truck shows up. Here is the sequence, worked backwards from the day the suite is ready.

A few details is all we need to come back to you with something real.

Almost every senior move that goes badly went wrong in the planning rather than on the day. The date arrives, the downsizing has not happened, the furniture has not been measured, the elevator has not been booked, and everything has to be done at once by people who are already exhausted.

The fix is unglamorous: start from the move-in date and work backwards, and put the slowest task first rather than last.

This page is the sequence we use. It is free to use whether you hire us or not.

How it works

From Quote Request to Moving Day

We plan around the person moving, the family and the residence, and confirm the scope before anything is booked. Selected Extended Zone Ontario moves available by arrangement.
  1. Start

Tell us about the move, whether it is your own or a parent’s. You do not have to know every detail before you start.

  2. Show Us

Photos, a video, or a virtual or in-home visit — whatever is easiest for the family. Our emails explain exactly what to send.

  3. Quote

A written quote package the family can read together and sign. We confirm the scope before anything is finalized.

  4. Move Day

A patient, methodical crew that works at a comfortable pace for the person moving, with the day planned so nobody is rushing.

Work Backwards, Not Forwards

The move-in date is fixed by somebody else, so it is the only reliable anchor. Everything else gets scheduled by how long it actually takes, in reverse order from that date.

The slowest task is almost never the move. It is deciding what to do with the contents of the house — which is why it has to start first, not once the packing is done.

  • As early as possible — get the suite floor plan and dimensions
  • As early as possible — start sorting the low-emotion rooms
  • Several weeks out — decide the furniture plan against the new space
  • Several weeks out — book the elevator and confirm the residence's rules
  • Several weeks out — arrange the donation and disposal route
  • Two weeks out — confirm the mover, the crew and the plan in writing
  • The week of — packing, with essentials kept back
  • Move day — the move itself, then assembly, unpacking and put-away

Decisions That Have to Be Made Before Anything Is Packed

  • What is going to the new space, measured rather than assumed
  • What family members are taking, and when they are collecting it
  • What is being donated, and who is delivering it
  • What is being sold, and by whom
  • What is being disposed of, and by what route
  • What must never go on the truck — documents, medication, valuables

The Questions to Ask the Residence Early

These answers change the whole schedule, and they are much harder to work around a week out than a month out.

  • What is the move-in window, and how long does it actually run?
  • Does the elevator need booking, and what is the maximum booking?
  • Which entrance should the truck use, and can it stand there?
  • Is there paperwork required before move-in?
  • What are the suite's room dimensions and doorway widths?
  • Is there storage, and how big is it really?

Building in the Slack You Will Need

Something always takes longer than expected — usually the sorting, occasionally a family member's collection, sometimes the weather. A plan with no slack in it turns a small slip into a crisis.

The most useful slack is at the front: start the sorting earlier than feels necessary. The least useful is on move day itself, where an elevator window and a residence schedule mean the time is not yours to extend.

How We Help With the Plan

Send us photos or a video walkthrough and we can do all of this before you commit to anything.
  • Review the current home and give you a realistic volume picture
  • Work the furniture against the new suite's dimensions
  • Identify difficult items and what they will need
  • Check the residence's requirements and build them into the day
  • Recommend the crew size and truck the move actually needs
  • Tell you what packing and downsizing help would genuinely save you
  • Give you a written quote and a plan you can question before booking

What Families Tell Us

Brett and his team are always professional and caring, I feel as if they would treat each person they help move as their own Grandparent. They respect guidelines surrounding move times for our building, and make sure each piece they move is treated with care and concern.

I had Stallion Movers today to move my dad from his home to a retirement home and am so pleased with their professionalism, punctuality and friendliness. Brett and Mitch were so careful getting around the items that weren't being moved. They were very thorough and moved quickly. Also Wendy in their office was extremely helpful and patient with all my questions and emails. I highly recommend them for any service you need that they provide. They came highly recommended so I didn't even get other quotes and that was the right decision. Thank you!

Wow. Excellent service, clean, professional, timely etc. We needed to move my mother to a senior's residence and her stuff. The residence recommended 2 services and I elected Stallion - possibly (likely) the other may be as good but Stallion were exceptional. I would highly recommend them for any move not just a senior transfer...

Great company, prompt and professional. I have used Stallion Movers twice to move my parents into retirement residences. They are professional, and super easy to deal with and understand and respect the protocols with senior residences. I highly recommend them.

Questions Families Ask Us

How early is too early to call you?

There is no such thing. A conversation months out costs nothing and often changes the plan for the better — particularly if downsizing is involved, because that is the part that needs the most time.

What if the move-in date moves?

It happens frequently, in both directions. Tell us as soon as you know and we will re-sequence. The planning work does not go to waste; only the calendar changes.

Do you charge for the planning?

A quote and the planning conversation that produces it are part of quoting the move. If you want us to do hands-on downsizing, sorting or packing work, that is a service with a price and it will be in your written quote.

Can you give us a plan even if we are not sure we will book?

Yes. We would rather be the company that told you honestly what the move involves. Some of those conversations end in a booking and some do not, and both are fine.

Let's Build the Plan.

Send us photos or a video and the move-in date, and we will come back with a sequence that works.
