FOR FAMILIES

Moving Mom or Dad?

You do not have to coordinate everything yourself. We have done this many times, and we can take on far more than the truck.

If you are reading this, there is a reasonable chance you are the adult child, you have a full-time job, and a decision has just been made about a parent's living situation that comes with a date attached.

What follows is rarely the moving day. It is the phone calls: the residence and its requirements, the siblings who each have a view, the furniture that will not fit, the china nobody wants, the house that has to be emptied, and a parent who may be grieving the whole thing while you are trying to organise it.

This isn't just another moving day, and we do not treat it as one.

How it works

From Quote Request to Moving Day

We plan around the person moving, the family and the residence, and confirm the scope before anything is booked. Selected Extended Zone Ontario moves available by arrangement.
  1. Start

Tell us about the move, whether it is your own or a parent’s. You do not have to know every detail before you start.

  2. Show Us

Photos, a video, or a virtual or in-home visit — whatever is easiest for the family. Our emails explain exactly what to send.

  3. Quote

A written quote package the family can read together and sign. We confirm the scope before anything is finalized.

  4. Move Day

A patient, methodical crew that works at a comfortable pace for the person moving, with the day planned so nobody is rushing.

What Families Are Actually Dealing With

  • Sorting years of belongings, often with the owner present and upset
  • Deciding what fits a suite a fraction of the size of the house
  • Coordinating a residence's move-in window and paperwork
  • Managing donations, disposal and the things nobody will take
  • Trying to make a small new space feel like home rather than storage
  • Doing all of it from a distance, or around work and children

How We Take Weight Off You

One call can handle a lot of moving pieces. Rather than lining up a mover, a packer, a junk-removal service and a donation run separately — and then coordinating them — you can hand most of it to one company that already knows how the pieces fit together.

  • Plan — the sequence, the deadlines, what has to happen when
  • Downsize — sorting and measuring, at a pace that works for your parent
  • Pack — carefully and labelled, in whole or in part
  • Move — with the residence's requirements already built in
  • Donate or dispose — taken away rather than left behind
  • Unpack and set up — so the first evening is liveable

If You Are Organising This From Out of Town

A large share of the families we work with are managing the move from another city or another province, which changes what is useful. We can work from photos and a video walkthrough, keep one person as your point of contact, and send updates rather than expect you to be present for every stage.

Our article on moving a parent from out of town sets out how to run it when you can only be there for part of it.

Talking to a Parent Who Does Not Want to Move

This is the hardest part and it is not a moving problem, so we will not pretend to solve it. What we can do is make the practical side predictable — an agreed plan, a known day, familiar furniture in place before the first night — because uncertainty is what most of the distress attaches to.

We work at the pace of the person whose belongings they are, and we do not rush somebody through a decision to keep a schedule.

Where to Start If the Date Is Already Set

  • Get the new suite's floor plan or room dimensions from the residence
  • Ask the residence for its move-in window, elevator booking and paperwork
  • Photograph or film every room, including basement, garage and storage
  • Send those to us and we will come back with a realistic plan
  • Agree what your family sorts and what you would rather we handled
  • Decide the donation and disposal route before packing starts, not after

What Families Tell Us

Brett and his team are always professional and caring, I feel as if they would treat each person they help move as their own Grandparent. They respect guidelines surrounding move times for our building, and make sure each piece they move is treated with care and concern.

I had Stallion Movers today to move my dad from his home to a retirement home and am so pleased with their professionalism, punctuality and friendliness. Brett and Mitch were so careful getting around the items that weren't being moved. They were very thorough and moved quickly. Also Wendy in their office was extremely helpful and patient with all my questions and emails. I highly recommend them for any service you need that they provide. They came highly recommended so I didn't even get other quotes and that was the right decision. Thank you!

Wow. Excellent service, clean, professional, timely etc. We needed to move my mother to a senior's residence and her stuff. The residence recommended 2 services and I elected Stallion - possibly (likely) the other may be as good but Stallion were exceptional. I would highly recommend them for any move not just a senior transfer...

Great company, prompt and professional. I have used Stallion Movers twice to move my parents into retirement residences. They are professional, and super easy to deal with and understand and respect the protocols with senior residences. I highly recommend them.

Questions Families Ask Us

Can you deal directly with the retirement residence?

Yes. Give us the contact and we will confirm the move-in window, the elevator booking, the loading entrance and any paperwork they need. Families should not have to relay logistics between two organisations while they are managing everything else.

My siblings and I disagree about what to keep. Where does that leave you?

Outside it, deliberately. We move and pack to the list the family gives us and we do not adjudicate. What we can do is tell you honestly what will and will not fit the new suite, which usually settles more of the argument than anything else.

Can you do this in stages rather than all in one day?

Often, yes — sorting and packing over a period, then the move itself, then unpacking and setup. Staging it is usually calmer for an older person than compressing everything into one day, and it is worth asking about when you first call.

What if we are not sure yet what help we need?

Call anyway. Describe the situation, send photos when you can, and we will tell you what we would do and roughly what it involves. There is no obligation attached to a conversation.

Tell Us What's Happening.

A short conversation is usually enough for us to tell you what is possible, what it involves and where we can take the load off you.
