COTTAGE & SEASONAL MOVES
Moving To and From Cottage Country
Start your quote here
A few details is all we need to come back to you with something real.
Cottage moves come in several shapes: furnishing a place that has just been bought, emptying one that has just been sold, moving a family member out of a seasonal home for good, or shifting the contents of a house into a cottage while something else is decided.
What they have in common is that the destination was not designed for a moving truck, and that almost every problem on the day is an access problem rather than a lifting one.
This is a move type rather than a place. Muskoka, Georgian Bay, the Bruce Peninsula and the lakes closer to home are all destinations we are asked about, and how far each one sits from Waterloo Region matters — some are well beyond our normal operating area and are arranged accordingly.

Move Day
A careful, methodical crew protects your home and belongings, with the day planned so nobody is rushing off to the next job.
Distance Is the First Question, Not the Last
Our normal operating area is approximately 160 km from Waterloo Region, depending on routing and job requirements. A good deal of cottage country sits outside it, and we would rather say that at the start than discover it on the day.
A destination beyond the normal area is not a refusal. Cottage moves outside our regular area are Extended Zone Moves: selected Ontario destinations, including ones several hours from Waterloo Region, may be accepted depending on scheduling, crew requirements, routing and the nature of the move. Each is assessed individually, may need a full scheduled day or an overnight, and is quoted specifically for that job. Our service-area page explains where we work.
Rural Roads and Long Driveways
The last two kilometres cause more trouble than the two hundred before them. Cottage lanes are often unpaved, narrow, soft after rain, overhung by branches at less than truck height, and steep in exactly the wrong place.
What we need to know in advance is simple and it changes the whole plan:
- Whether a full-size truck can physically reach the building, and turn once it is there
- The surface of the lane and how it behaves in wet weather
- Overhead clearance from branches and wires along the approach
- Whether there is anywhere to turn around, or whether it is a reverse the whole way out
- Any private-road or association rules about heavy vehicles
- Where we can stage furniture if the truck has to stop short of the door
Yard-to-Yard Travel, Volume and Truck Selection
Cottage moves are planned yard to yard — the whole day's travel, not just the time at each end. The first 40 round-trip kilometres are included on local moves. Additional mileage/travel charges may apply outside the local area.
The load volume decides the truck, and the road in may decide it too: a smaller truck, or more than one load, can be the right answer for a narrow lane. Trucks are rented or arranged for each move to suit it, and the assessment is what tells us which.
Additional stops — a storage unit on the way, a second property — add loading and travel time and are planned into the quote.
Seasonal Access, and Choosing the Date Around It
Seasonal roads are the constraint people forget. A lane that is easy in August may be unplowed in February, closed by an association until spring, or impassable during a wet thaw. Water access and ferry timetables change the job entirely.
Where a date can move, we will tell you which weeks are sensible. Where it cannot, we plan for the conditions rather than hope for better ones — and we are honest in advance about the risk of a date being moved by weather.
Tight Unload Areas and Difficult Truck Access
Cottages tend to have small footprints, decks and steps instead of a level door, and no yard to lay things out in. Unloading is often a sequence rather than a pile: what goes in last has to come off first, because there is nowhere to put it down twice.
Where the truck genuinely cannot reach the building, the work becomes a shuttle — a smaller vehicle, a longer carry, or staging at the top of the lane. That is normal cottage work, but it takes time and it has to be in the plan and in the quote rather than improvised.
Storage, PODs and Multi-Stage Moves
Cottage moves are frequently not a single journey. Contents get split between a house and a cottage, held while a sale closes, or staged into a portable container because the two dates do not line up.
We load and unload portable storage containers, and we can handle a move that happens in stages rather than in one day. The container itself is rented from a third-party provider, not from Stallion — our storage page is clear about who does what.
Long Travel Days, and When an Overnight Makes Sense
A distant cottage means a long travel day at both ends of the work, and commercial driving-hour rules apply to the truck and its driver. For the further destinations the sensible plan is sometimes to load one day and deliver the next.
Where that is the case we say so while quoting. It is better for the furniture, better for the crew, and it is the difference between an unload done properly and one done in the dark.
What We Work Out Before a Cottage Move
- Whether a full-size truck can reach the building, and what happens if it cannot
- The state and the season of the access road
- Where furniture can be staged if there is a carry
- The unload sequence for a small footprint
- Packing for a longer and rougher drive than a town move
- Any container or storage stage, and who is providing it
- Whether the job is one day or two

Questions Families Ask Us
Is cottage country inside your normal operating area?
Some of it is and a good deal of it is not. Our normal area is approximately 160 km from Waterloo Region, depending on routing and job requirements; destinations beyond it can be accepted selectively as extended-zone Ontario moves, planned and quoted case by case. Tell us the address and we will be straight with you.
Our lane is narrow and not maintained. Can you still do it?
Usually, once we know. The answer might be a smaller vehicle, staging at the top of the lane and shuttling down, or simply more time in the plan. What causes a bad day is arriving without knowing — photographs or a short video of the approach are the most useful thing you can send us.
Can you move us in winter?
Where the access road is maintained, yes. Where it is a seasonal road, it depends entirely on conditions and we will say honestly whether it is sensible. We would rather move a date than put a loaded truck somewhere it cannot get out of.
Can you load a container at the cottage instead?
Yes — loading and unloading portable containers is normal work for us, and it suits cottage moves where the dates do not line up. The container is rented from a third-party company directly by you; we handle what goes in it and how it is secured.
Can you do it in stages?
Yes. Splitting contents between a house and a cottage, or moving in two visits around a closing date, is common and we will plan it as one job rather than two unrelated bookings.
