The True Value of Moving
Almost everybody shopping for a mover starts by comparing hourly rates, because it is the one number every company will give you over the phone. It is also the number that tells you least.
On an hourly move, the bill is the rate multiplied by the hours — and the hours are decided long before anybody lifts anything. Comparing rates while ignoring what drives the hours is how a cheap quote becomes an expensive day.
Don't choose your mover on hourly rate alone.
What Actually Decides the Hours
- Whether the crew knew what they were coming to before they arrived
- Whether the packing was genuinely finished
- Access — stairs, elevator windows, parking, long carries
- How many items need dismantling, and whether that was anticipated
- How well the truck is loaded, which decides how many trips it takes
- Whether the crew is the right size for the job or one person short
- Whether anybody worked out what would not fit before it was carried
The Arithmetic Nobody Does
A crew quoted at a lower hourly rate that takes two hours longer costs more than the higher rate that finishes on time. That is not a rhetorical point; on a typical move it is the difference between two quotes that looked twenty per cent apart.
And the hours are not random. They are the direct consequence of planning, crew size, equipment and experience — the very things a low rate is usually cutting.
The Costs That Never Appear on a Quote
Some of the real cost of a badly handled move never reaches the invoice at all: a day of annual leave burned because the crew finished at nine at night, a damaged dresser that was in the family for fifty years, a retirement residence's move-in window missed, a parent left distressed because nothing was where it should be on the first night.
None of that is recoverable, and none of it shows up in a rate comparison.
How to Compare Movers Properly
Ask each company the same questions and compare the answers rather than the numbers. The ones who ask you more questions before quoting are usually the ones whose quote will hold.
- Did they ask about inventory, access and stairs before quoting?
- Will they put the quote in writing, with what is and is not included?
- What is the minimum booking, and how is travel charged?
- What protection is standard rather than an extra?
- What happens if the move runs longer than estimated?
- Can they show a reviewable history under the same name?

Are you expensive?
We are not the cheapest, deliberately. Our published rates and packages are on the pricing page so you can judge for yourself, and your written quote sets out exactly what applies to your move before HST. What we will not do is quote low to win the booking and make it up in hours.
Why do you ask so many questions before quoting?
Because those questions are the difference between a quote that holds and one that does not. Anyone who will give you a firm number without asking about inventory, access and stairs is either guessing or planning to revise it.
What if my move takes longer than you estimated?
We tell you while it is happening rather than at the end. If something has genuinely changed — more contents than we were shown, access that was not as described — you will hear it from the crew at the point it becomes apparent, with the options.
How do I know a low quote is unrealistic?
