Paying a Living Wage

CBC News covered Stallion Movers at the time as a certified living wage employer in Waterloo Region. That certification has since lapsed — we no longer hold or maintain it — but we still pay a living wage.

Moving is physical work, and it is work where the customer’s whole day depends on who happens to turn up. A crew that is paid properly is a crew that stays, and a crew that stays is a crew that has done this a hundred times before — which is the entire difference between a mover who knows your staircase will not take a box spring and one who finds out the hard way.

That is the honest business reason as well as the decent one. The wage we pay is a large part of why we can say the person handling your mother’s furniture is experienced, and it is part of what sits behind the fact that we are not the cheapest mover in the region.

Look for the CBC coverage below for the story as it was reported at the time, rather than as we would describe it. We no longer hold the certification — we explain why we no longer keep up any memberships or certifications on our previous memberships page — and we have not changed what we pay.

Shelter Movers Waterloo

Shelter Movers moves people leaving abuse — safely, confidentially, and free of charge. Stallion has supported the Waterloo chapter, including help with advertising costs and volunteer mover training.

Leaving an abusive home is dangerous, and one of the most dangerous parts of it is the move itself: it takes time, it is visible, and it usually has to happen with almost no notice. Shelter Movers exists to make that possible. Their volunteers move women and children out, at no cost, coordinated with the agencies supporting them.

Our support has taken two forms. We have helped with advertising costs for the Waterloo chapter, because a service like that only works if the people who need it know it exists. And we have helped with volunteer mover training — the practical craft of moving furniture safely, quickly and without damaging a property, which is not obvious and matters a great deal when a move has to be done under pressure.

If you are in a position to volunteer or donate, the Waterloo chapter is the place to start.
