How to Prepare for a Virtual Moving Estimate

Charge your phone, turn on the lights, open every closet and walk the house in order. Ten minutes of prep makes the estimate far more accurate.

To prepare for a virtual moving estimate, charge your phone, turn on the lights in every room, open closet and cupboard doors, and plan a route through the home from top to bottom. Have a short list ready of what is not moving, any large or unusual items, and the access at both ends — stairs, elevator, parking. Then walk slowly and show everything.

Our virtual survey page explains how Stallion’s virtual estimates work. This is the practical prep to make one go well.

Before the Call

  • Charge your phone, or keep it plugged into a long cable
  • Check your Wi-Fi reaches the basement and garage, or use mobile data there
  • Turn on the lights and open the blinds
  • Open closets, cupboards and storage spaces
  • Unlock the garage, shed and any storage locker you can reach
  • Write down your move date, or the window you are considering

Walk in a Logical Order

Start at one end of the home and work through it room by room — top floor down, or front to back. Jumping around makes it easy to miss a room, and it is hard for the estimator to keep track of what they have seen.

In each room, pause in the doorway for a full view, then move slowly. Hold the phone horizontally if you can. Point the camera into closets and under beds where storage hides.

Say What Is Staying

The estimator cannot tell from a video that the sectional is being sold or the bunk beds are going to a cousin. Say it as you go. "Everything in this room except the desk" is exactly the kind of detail that makes the quote accurate.

Point Out the Unusual

Some items change a plan: a piano, a safe, treadmill or weights, an aquarium, large artwork, glass tabletops, a power recliner. Point them out and mention anything you know about weight or size. If something is valuable or sentimental, say so too.

Show the Way Out

Access is part of the estimate. Walk the camera from the furthest room to where the truck will park: stairs, tight turns, the front walk, the driveway. If you live in a condo or apartment, show the hallway and mention the elevator and loading area.

You probably cannot show the new home, so describe it: house or building, floor number, elevator or stairs, parking, and anything you already know about access.

Have Your Questions Ready

  • Do I need packing help, or just part of it?
  • What is the starting minimum for a move my size, and what is included?
  • What would change the quote?
  • How is travel charged?
  • What coverage is included, and should I check my home insurance?

If a Live Call Does Not Suit You

Not everyone can do a live video call at a set time. A recorded walkthrough, or a set of clear photos of each room, closet and access point, can work just as well. Send it with the same notes: what is staying, what is unusual, and what access looks like at both ends.

After the Estimate

Once we have the walkthrough, a written quote follows. It sets out the plan, the minimum and the estimated range, and it is based on what you showed and told us. If something changes before the move — you decide to bring the shed contents after all — let us know so the plan can change with it.

You do not need a perfectly tidy home for a virtual estimate. You need an honest one. Show it as it is, and we will take it from there.
